FDA Explores the Role of Generative AI in Psychiatry: Insights from Dr. Hans Eriksson, MD, PhD - Tech Digital Minds

On November 20, 2024, the FDA’s Digital Health Advisory Committee (DHAC) met to discuss the implications of generative AI in medical devices, particularly those aimed at mental health support. This marked the second meeting focused specifically on AI-enabled content, following a broader discussion earlier in 2024. The committee aims to assess how generative AI can enhance the safety and effectiveness of digital mental health products, which are proliferating in a landscape eager for innovation.
The emerging report from the FDA outlines the regulatory challenges associated with patient-facing AI systems that frequently update and generate new content. With the increasing introduction of AI therapists and mental health chatbots, which provide therapeutic suggestions and engage users in conversation, unique risks arise. These systems may inadvertently guide patients in ways that lack the clinical oversight traditionally provided by human professionals.

Following the DHAC meeting, HCPLive had a discussion with Dr. Hans Eriksson, a psychiatrist and Chief Medical Officer at HMNC Brain Health. He delineated two primary applications of AI within psychiatric practice: assessing individual patient characteristics and analyzing broader population data to tailor treatment algorithms. This perspective highlights a significant potential for AI to ameliorate the conventional trial-and-error approach that often accompanies psychiatric treatment.
Dr. Eriksson pointed out, “There are lots of different biologics, and unless we can pinpoint these biologics, it’s very difficult to find the right intervention.” AI tools could significantly streamline this process, targeting treatments more accurately based on nuanced data analyses.
The FDA officially acknowledges the potential public health benefits that generative AI can offer, particularly in enhancing access to mental health care. Nonetheless, the risks are equally pronounced. Key concerns identified by the FDA include:

These submissions should clearly outline intended use, indications, and care environments. Furthermore, the FDA emphasizes the necessity for rigorous performance testing. Additionally, after AI tools reach the market, the FDA has called for automated auditing and quality assurance checks to guarantee consistency in various settings, which ensures that every patient receives reliable support, regardless of where they access care.
The FDA has stressed the importance of maintaining human oversight in the deployment of AI technologies. Adequate training for healthcare providers and transparency about how AI models function are essential for building trust and mitigating risks.
In Dr. Eriksson’s view, the conversations surrounding the FDA’s reports indicate a keen awareness of the rapid developments in this field.
