Huawei’s Bold Move: Ditching Windows for HarmonyOS and Betting on Independence

Huawei ditching Windows for its own HarmonyOS? That’s like telling Microsoft, “Thanks for the memories, but we’re seeing other operating systems now.” The announcement from Yu Chengdong, head of Huawei’s consumer business, signals the tech giant’s shift toward independence with HarmonyOS Next – a fresh, Linux-free kernel (yes, no Android apps here either). Huawei is betting on better performance and security, though it’s unclear how many developers will jump on board. At present, Lenovo dominates the Chinese PC market with 38% share, so Huawei’s bold move might shake things up—or it might just be a patriotic footnote.

Meanwhile, India’s government was told to put its fact-checking plans on ice by the Bombay High Court. The court ruled the proposed takedown powers unconstitutional, quelling concerns about potential censorship. That’s one less power grab for now, though the disinformation debate in India is far from settled.

On the partnership front, GoTo is hedging its bets, signing a deal with Tencent Cloud just a week after shaking hands with Alibaba Cloud. This five-year partnership is all about fortifying GoTo’s ecosystem with the latest cloud goodies, proving that in the world of superapps, two cloud partners are better than one.

In Japan, Fukushima is getting a second act—this time as a datacenter hotspot, thanks to its renewable energy resources and plans to host Nvidia AI hardware. Not bad for a region known for less-than-glowing headlines in the past.

And for something truly different, Mongolia just pulled a digital rabbit out of its hat, climbing 28 places on the UN’s E-Government Survey since 2022. With improved access to government services and expanded digital infrastructure, Mongolia is turning heads in the e-governance world, outranking the US at 46th place.

All in all, it’s a week full of surprising moves—tech giants making bold bets, governments reshuffling digital priorities, and small countries climbing global ranks. In the fast lane of innovation, there’s never a dull moment.
