Increasing Numbers of Small Business Owners Embrace AI for Time and Cost Savings

Brittany Naylor’s Journey from Fintech to Makeshift Crafts: A Community Oasis in Westminster

Westminster, Colorado, has become home to a unique and inspiring venture initiated by Brittany Naylor, who transitioned from the high-pressure world of financial technology (fintech) to pursue her long-held passion for crafting. After experiencing burnout from the turbulent nature of tech jobs during the pandemic—where mass hiring cycles turned into mass layoffs—Naylor found herself reflecting on her future career. “I cannot do this anymore; this is literally gonna kill me,” she confided to Denver7, expressing the toll that the corporate world had taken on her health and well-being.

A Dream Realized

In May, Naylor opened Makeshift Crafts, a dream she had nurtured since she was just 17 years old. This venture is not merely a craft store; it’s envisioned as a "safe haven" where community members can convene, share their creativity, and find peace through artistic expression. Workshops, movie nights, and other events encourage a culture of relaxation and artistic exploration. Naylor aims to create an inclusive atmosphere where imperfections are celebrated rather than critiqued.

“I think art and creativity can really support mental health,” she emphasizes. The joy of crafting has become a therapeutic escapade for many visitors, offering respite from life’s stresses. Naylor shares stories of community members who’ve benefited from the space, like Philadelphia Morgan, a mother whose daughters found joy and inclusivity in the workshops, especially beneficial for her child with autism.

Crafting Connection in the Community

The atmosphere within Makeshift Crafts is warm and inviting, designed for everyone—whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth. People engage not only in crafting but in fostering friendships, sharing stories, and building a supportive network. Naylor’s goal is to ensure that every visitor feels valued and at home.

The summer camps hosted in the shop have become notable highlights, particularly for families with children who may find traditional camps challenging. Morgan recalls how her daughters thrived in the welcoming environment, making the daily half-hour trek worthwhile.

Embracing Technology in Crafting

As a savvy business owner, Naylor recognizes the importance of integrating technology to maintain the friendly environment that Makeshift Crafts embodies. To achieve this, she employs a variety of digital tools, which help streamline operations and give her staff more time to engage with customers. With technologies like Shopify and Trello, she can analyze sales data, organize workshops, and deliver personalized customer experiences efficiently.

“There’s no doubt in my mind that’s what we need to do to help us scale the business and not lose our minds,” she laughs. This technological approach is not only a time-saver but also a cost-effective strategy for a small business, allowing Naylor to ensure her staff is present to assist customers and cultivate a fulfilling experience.

The Growing Adoption of AI in Small Businesses

Naylor’s emphasis on integrating technology in her small business reflects a larger trend observed in the market. According to a recent survey by the National Federation of Independent Business, nearly 25% of small business owners are now using AI technologies. The U.S. Small Business Administration has also noted the potential benefits and risks associated with AI adoption.

Experts like Sam Jay, Professor at Metropolitan State University, express excitement about the benefits AI brings, especially its ability to uncover trends and provide insights that business owners might overlook. “The machine is better at recognizing that trend because it can take this 30,000-foot view of all that data and provide that insight,” he notes.

Balancing AI and Human Connection

While Naylor values the efficiency that technology provides, she remains focused on the human aspect of her business. She is aware of the risk of over-relying on technology, yet she reassures, “My business isn’t based on technology. It’s based on people and community.” For her, the primary focus remains on building connections and ensuring her craft shop is a nurturing space for all who enter.

Her perspective reflects a balanced view on the integration of AI and technology in small businesses—using it as a tool to enhance operations while ensuring the heart and soul of the enterprise remains grounded in community and genuine human interaction.

Through her journey, Brittany Naylor is not merely crafting art; she’s crafting experiences, memories, and a supportive network in the heart of Westminster, proving that sometimes, the best paths forward are those that lead us back to our true passions.
