Repsol Leads the Way with AI Agent Platform for Digital Transformation in Spanish Energy Sector

Repsol, the prominent Spanish energy company, recently made headlines with its exciting launch of an internal intelligent agent construction platform. This significant development marks yet another stride in the company’s ambitious digitalization journey. The platform leverages agent-based artificial intelligence (AI) and multi-agent systems, meticulously designed to organize AI agents into intricate workflows, thereby redefining operational processes within the organization.

The innovative pilot project, realized through a strategic partnership with Accenture, aims to foster collaborative environments among teams within Repsol. By enabling employees to enhance their working models, the initiative promises to boost overall productivity. A pivotal part of this initiative includes the creation of extensive knowledge bases tailored to support AI agents, as well as the development of a custom interface meant to adapt language models specifically for professional collaboration.

The pilot program debuted in Repsol’s Digitalization and Services department, a division consisting of over 700 dedicated employees. Throughout the program, the company deployed 22 AI agents across three separate teams, providing much-needed support for over four months in essential departmental processes. The engagement of more than 50 employees to oversee these AI teams resulted in numerous efficiencies and operational improvements, demonstrating the tangible benefits of integrating AI into everyday workflows.

Susana Meseguer, the Executive Managing Director of Digitalization and Services at Repsol, emphasized that this new platform underscores the company’s commitment to pioneering the application of disruptive technologies within the energy sector. “Since we launched our Digital Program over six years ago,” Meseguer noted, “one of our primary goals has been to enhance efficiency and competitiveness, continuously transforming our organization with both the talent of our employees and digitalization as focal points.”

Central to Repsol’s ongoing strategy is its Digitalization Program, which forms a crucial part of the company’s Strategic Plan through 2027. This initiative actively seeks to harness emerging technologies like AI to navigate the challenges of energy transition and decarbonization. Remarkably, Repsol has been utilizing generative AI for more than two years via its Generative AI Competence Center, boasting a portfolio of over 60 production use cases. Of those, 22 have already been successfully scaled, and more than 5,000 employees have undergone training in generative AI techniques – a testament to Repsol’s commitment to empowering its workforce.

The launch of the intelligent agent platform also reflects a broader trend in the global energy sector, where leading companies are increasingly investing in sophisticated AI systems. These advances aim to streamline complex operational processes, manage extensive datasets, and ultimately drive significant efficiency gains. While a recent study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) highlighted that many generative AI initiatives fall short of demonstrating genuine value, Repsol asserts that its promising outcomes stem from several core factors. These include an emphasis on reinventing workflows, a steadfast commitment to multi-agent systems for intricate processes, and a focus on fostering collaborative environments that enrich professionalism.

As Repsol integrates its new multi-agent platform into its operations, it stands alongside other major players in the energy industry who are also employing advanced AI technologies. This integration is critical for maintaining competitiveness and adapting to an ever-evolving technological and environmental landscape.
