JSS Science and Technology University: A New Dawn for Startups in Karnataka

JSS Science and Technology University (JSS STU), located in the historic city of Mysuru, has recently made headlines by securing formal recognition as a Technology Business Incubator (TBI) 2.0 under the Karnataka Startup Policy 2022-2027. This achievement not only solidifies the university’s position as a pivotal player in the startup ecosystem but also marks a significant step toward fostering innovation and entrepreneurship throughout the region.

State Support for Innovation

The Karnataka government has committed to providing Rs 10 crore over the next five years to bolster startup initiatives and incubation programs at JSS STU. This financial backing is intended to create a sustainable environment that nurtures innovative ideas and helps entrepreneurs turn them into viable businesses. The recognition falls under Karnataka’s broader TBI 2.0 program, which aims to extend the reach of startup culture beyond Bengaluru, encouraging research-based entrepreneurship that can thrive in various parts of the state.

Celebrating Legacy and Innovation

The announcement coincided with the 40th anniversary celebrations of the SJCE–Science & Technology Entrepreneurs Park (SJCE-STEP) at JSS STU. Established in 1985, SJCE-STEP is one of India’s oldest technology business incubators, playing an instrumental role in positioning Mysuru as a vibrant innovation hub, well beyond the boundaries of Bengaluru. The celebrations, termed the Ruby Jubilee, are set to continue until early 2026, featuring multiple national-level initiatives aimed at revitalizing and enhancing the startup landscape in Karnataka.

A Hub for Research and Development

A pivotal initiative announced at the event was the launch of the JSS Innovation & Research Park, a sprawling facility poised to cover over two lakh square feet. This state-of-the-art center is designed to support various critical functions for startups, including research and development, product design, testing, validation, and commercialization. With an anticipated completion date by 2028, the innovation park is expected to become a significant contributor to job creation and research collaboration within the region.

Focus on Deep-Tech Innovation

The TBI 2.0 initiative at JSS STU will emphasize emerging deep-tech sectors, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, digital twin technologies, language technologies, computer vision, and semiconductors. These focus areas align closely with national priorities and industrial demand, ensuring that entrepreneurs supported by this initiative are at the forefront of technological advancement.

A Legacy of Supporting Startups

Over the last 40 years, SJCE-STEP has significantly contributed to the startup ecosystem in Karnataka, mentoring more than 500 startups, creating over 10,000 jobs, and conducting over 1,000 training programs. Additionally, the incubator has successfully managed various seed funds and grants, tightening the fabric of support for budding entrepreneurs. This legacy illustrates the vital role that such institutions play in nurturing homegrown talent and innovation.

Conclusion

As JSS STU steps into this new role under the TBI 2.0 program, the future looks promising for budding entrepreneurs and innovators in Karnataka. With robust state support, a commitment to deep-tech innovation, and a longstanding history of success, the university is positioned to greatly impact the startup landscape in the region.
