News Highlights: Advances in Arm’s Edge AI Technology
Exciting Developments
The rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence (AI) is seeing groundbreaking innovations tailored for the edge, where devices can process data closer to where it’s generated. Among these advancements, Arm has recently announced the launch of the world’s first Armv9 edge AI platform, specifically optimized for Internet of Things (IoT) and edge AI workloads. This platform will be accessible through Arm Flexible Access, a program designed to provide innovators with low-cost, streamlined access to cutting-edge AI performance and security.
With over 400 tape-outs and 300 active members, Arm Flexible Access has already proven to be a catalyst for innovation across the ecosystem. This offering is especially essential for startups and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), as they look to accelerate the development of the next generation of intelligent edge devices.
The Future of AI Computing at the Edge
As the next wave of AI computing technology unfolds, the focus is shifting toward devices and systems that can efficiently bring intelligence close to data sources. From smart wearables and AI assistants to advanced robotics, the real promise lies in high-performance computing solutions that cater to various applications. By enhancing accessibility and lowering barriers to entry, Arm is empowering everyone in its ecosystem—be it a budding startup or a well-established OEM—to harness the power of advanced AI capabilities.
Arm Flexible Access now includes the groundbreaking Armv9 edge AI platform, marking a significant step in making state-of-the-art AI technology accessible to all.
Lower Barriers, Faster Innovation
Adding the Armv9 edge AI platform to Arm Flexible Access allows companies to enter the market with minimal investment while also speeding up their innovation processes. This platform delivers high performance and power efficiency, complete with essential security features, which are critical for scaling intelligent edge devices.
The Armv9 Edge AI Platform, which showcases the ultra-efficient Arm Cortex-A320 CPU and the Arm Ethos-U85 NPU, is designed to support on-device AI models that can handle over one billion parameters. It incorporates advanced security technologies such as Pointer Authentication Code (PAC), Branch Target Identification (BTI), and Memory Tagging Extension (MTE), ensuring that critical data and applications are protected at the edge.
The Foundation for Next-Gen Applications
The combination of Arm’s architectural features, including Scalable Vector Extension 2 (SVE2) for machine learning capabilities and the efficiency of the Ethos-U85, provides an excellent foundation for developing next-generation edge AI applications. These range from smart cameras and home automation devices to industrial controls and intuitive human-machine interfaces. The goal is to facilitate natural interactions through technologies that allow machines to perceive and react to their environment, all while ensuring secure, on-device data processing.
Anticipation builds as the Cortex-A320 will be available through Arm Flexible Access in November 2025, followed by the Ethos-U85 in early 2026.
Empowering the Ecosystem
Arm’s mission is to democratize access to state-of-the-art technology, ensuring that every member of its ecosystem has the tools necessary to thrive. With the introduction of the Armv9 through Arm Flexible Access, the next generation of innovators will have access to the most advanced architecture in edge AI computing. This transition is becoming increasingly crucial as the demand for enhanced AI capabilities rises, paired with an expectation for improved efficiency and fortified security.
Driving Innovation with Arm Flexible Access
Arm Flexible Access offers partners the unique opportunity of low-cost or no-cost upfront access to a wide array of Arm technologies, tools, and resources. This model has already proven essential for fostering innovation by allowing enterprises to experiment and iterate designs freely before committing to any licensing fees for the technologies utilized in their final offerings.
Over the last five years, this approach has led to around 400 successful tape-outs, with the majority targeting embedded and IoT applications. Innovators such as Raspberry Pi and Weeteq are already leveraging these benefits, bringing new intelligence to the edge and changing how devices interact with the world.
Leading the Edge AI Computing Landscape
At the heart of Arm’s approach is the commitment to providing world-class technology to democratize innovation. With the inclusion of Armv9 in the Flexible Access program, companies can now meet the increasing demand for higher performance and enhanced AI capabilities, all while maintaining strong security. By enabling broader access to its pioneering solutions, Arm is shaping the future of edge AI computing, ultimately making advanced technology more accessible to all.
