Shiv Sena UBT Highlights Concerns Over AI Misuse

On January 3, 2026, Shiv Sena UBT Member of Parliament (MP) Priyanka Chaturvedi expressed her heartfelt gratitude towards Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) for their swift action in addressing her concerns regarding artificial intelligence (AI) misuse on social media platform X. The response followed Chaturvedi’s letter highlighting serious issues that she claimed were detrimental to women’s rights and safety online.

The Initial Concern

Chaturvedi raised alarms over the alleged misuse of AI tools, particularly the AI tool named Grok on X. In a self-made video addressing the public, she explained the gravity of the situation, stating that it was not merely a technological issue but a fundamental violation of women’s rights. She pointed out that the tool was reportedly being used to create fake accounts and display women’s photos in objectionable contexts, thereby undermining their dignity.

Public and Media Support

Acknowledging the tremendous support from the public and media, Chaturvedi emphasized the collective effort in bringing attention to the problem. "When I wrote this letter, I received tremendous support from the public. I would like to thank the media for raising their voice and covering this issue," she stated. This level of public engagement underscores the critical role that social media and journalism play in navigating and addressing sensitive issues like online harassment.

Government Action

In response to these grave concerns, MeitY instructed X to take immediate action in a notice that highlighted the platform’s failure to comply with statutory obligations under the Information Technology Act, 2000. The notice demanded that the platform dismantle any content that was obscene, vulgar, or sexually explicit within 72 hours. Chaturvedi noted that the urgency of the situation necessitated immediate compliance and an audit report, signaling to other tech firms the importance of accountability in protecting women’s rights.

Outcry Against AI Misuse

The misuse of AI tools like Grok was termed "a major attack on the dignity" of women by Chaturvedi. She condemned the lack of safeguards in the AI sector, stating, "The guardrails are missing in AI tools." She pointed out that the misuse of these technologies not only violates individual rights but also reflects a broader societal disregard for women’s safety.

Furthermore, Chaturvedi stressed that women should not be silenced or intimidated into not sharing their photographs. She firmly stated, "Women can share their photos anywhere and anytime. If photos are misused, it will be considered a criminal act, and action will be taken." This assertive stance reinforces the idea that accountability extends beyond individuals to include the platforms enabling such abuses.

A Call for Responsibility

The MP also reiterated that as social media platforms and tech companies increasingly grow their AI tools, they carry a responsibility to ensure these technologies are not used for harmful purposes. She emphasized that all stakeholders, including companies like Google, Meta, and Microsoft, must implement necessary safeguards. "If these platforms are growing in the AI sector and using these mechanisms, then they also have a responsibility to properly implement these safeguards," she affirmed.

The Legislative Backdrop

Chaturvedi’s actions and the subsequent governmental response bring to light the pressing need for legislative frameworks that protect users against technological misuse. By raising these issues, she has not only highlighted the inadequacies in current laws but also called for the need to evolve them in response to the rapid advancements in AI technology.

Conclusion

Through her advocacy, Priyanka Chaturvedi has elevated discussions about AI’s role in society, spotlighting the need for ethical considerations and responsible practices. The swift engagement from the government signifies a growing recognition of the need to protect individuals, especially women, in the digital landscape. As this dialogue continues to unfold, it raises important questions about the balance between innovation and responsibility in the ever-evolving tech world.
